The Microbiome

The Microbiome is the bacterial population that lives inside (mainly the intestines) and on every area of your body. Until very recently, the medical community has largely ignored these bacteria and focused on harmful (pathogenic) bacteria. However there is now overwhelming evidence to the critical nature of these bacteria AND that the majority of people DO NOT have the bacterial population that is optimal. Dr. William Davis, the well-known cardiologist who exposed the issues with today’s wheat & their genetically amplified gluten in his “Wheat Belly” books, has now published SUPER GUT. This book is the real first publication to inform the average person about this issue and evidence to back his claims up.

Dr. William Davis has revealed how to FIX your microbiome!

Dr. Glant used Dr. Davis work on the Wheat Belly series to adjust his diet when he realized that gluten was a major issue for him and his daughter. What Dr. Davis is saying in his new book, SUPER GUT, is the following:

1. Studies of pre-farming humans (using DNA analysis) show a microbiome that matches primitive isolated tribes that still exit AND is different than modern humans;

2. Until very recently, it was virtually impossible to study the microbiome in the small intestine;

3. Evidence is rapidly accumulating to show that a poor microbiome is both contributory and instrumental in many of modern human conditions, not seen in these early or isolated cultures (gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, autoimmune, neurological, etc.),

4. Modern diets create an intestinal environment that is hostile to beneficial bacteria,

5. Antibiotics and some foods also are hostile to the microbiome, and

6. The best way to “fix” this situation is to make your own probiotic FERMENTED DAIRY PRODUCT (like yogurt but many more types and amounts of beneficial bacteria) and correct your diet.

Dr. Davis provides a wealth of information in his book, SUPER GUT, and I highly encourage you to get a copy, but even for those with medical background it is a challenge to implement. So to both test this information and figure out how to do it best, Dr. Glant has been now making Fermented Dairy Products (FDP) for about 5 months and sharing it with neighbors and others interested. It has been amazing how many people fall in love with these products immediately and report significant and at times “life changing” improvements in mood, relief of pain and improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms. DO NOT be fooled, this is not regular yogurt and at the same time, it is NOT difficult to make if you have the correct recipe and ingredients (probiotic bacteria). Also, this is not something you can buy easily or cheaply, but making it yourself is almost as inexpensive as buying regular yogurt…if you have the right ingredients!

So this is the first issue…how do I know I am getting the best of the best bacteria? The best sources are high quality probiotics (which typically cost between $40 to $80 a month-using 30-60 capsules). But even with that you have to buy 6-10 of these probiotics pills to get all of the best (costs about to $300 just to get this mix to include all of the important bacteria that have been shown in clinical trials to be therapeutic). So Dr. Glant has been able to create a probiotic mix with a variety of the best probiotics in a KIT that allows anyone to start this process that took Dr. Glant months to create. He has instructions on how to make your own FDP that will be better than any commercial yogurt with hundreds of billions more bacteria than any probiotic you could buy at any cost. You see these FDPs cannot easily be made and sold commercially because of the extremely long fermentation (36 hours) and cost to procure all these bacterial species. Dr Glant’s Microbiome Kit is a quick and inexpensive way to get past this implementation hassle. In fact the most common comment from readers of SUPER GUT was that this was a fantastic book, but getting started with making FDPs was challenging. Dr. Glant’s Microbiome KIT is the solution.

Now it is important to also address your diet, particularly if you want to really get these good bacteria to thrive in your intestines. However, Dr. Glant was surprised that no one who started his FDPs did any diet adjustments, but still benefited. This is apparently because they are eating this FDP daily or most days of the week. Thus these FDP probiotics keep your gut populated despite the less than optimal environment you may be providing. However, there are several recipes and rules that are very helpful because they help beneficial bacteria AND they increase the MUCUS layer in the small intestine. In fact, this mucus layer is critical because it keeps many harmful bacteria isolated in the small intestine cavity and limits the intestinal walls exposure to proteins that can cause food allergies and intolerance. Unfortunately, many processed foods (emulsifiers and preservatives) and our diet in general damage this critical mucus layer. It has been shown that by avoiding processed foods and emulsifiers and drinking a green tea with cloves and prebiotics can completely repair this mucus layer in about a week. As Dr. Davis states, if you shop at your grocery on the outside (fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, etc.) and avoid the center isles (where the preserved and processed foods are located), you will be much healthier. You also should minimize sugar and carbohydrates as they encourage harmful bacteria and put stress on your pancreas (insulin). However, you do not need to do this on day one, in fact it may be better for many to start with the FDP and start drinking the green tea mix followed by modifying areas of the diet more slowly.

In addition to the supplies in the Microbiome Kit (bacterial capsule, prebiotic potato starch) there are instructions and recommendations on good choices for a yogurt maker and how to used the kit to start your own Fermented Dairy Product. Also on the product page there are more in depth discussions of various aspects of Dr. Davis’s book, which includes many helpful recipes for both production of FDPs and for meals that help your microbiome. Also for those who avoid diary, there are recipes for Coconut milk versions. Also Dr. Glant will share how you can make your own Sour Cream, Cream Cheese and Cottage cheese with these same helpful bacteria!
